Once registered, we will share your availability with your local MP, to determine a suitable time for a Rep Day meeting. You will also receive learning resources to help prepare for the meeting. Once a time has been confirmed, our team will connect you directly with the MP’s staff to discuss any final details prior to the meeting.
The program is open to any Canadian elementary, middle or high school and there is no cost to participate. The learning resources have been developed for students in grades 4 to 12/secondary 1-V and are available in both English and French.
No. Although elected representatives are usually associated with a political party, it is their role to represent and engage with all constituents in their riding.
The meetings are non-partisan and educational, and our goal is to put a face to politics and to dispel negative attitudes towards politicians and the political process by replacing them with greater knowledge about government and its institutions. The feedback over the years has been very positive.
When you are talking about current issues, try to reinforce the fact that different people and parties share different political views.
If you, or your administrative team have any questions or concerns about hosting a sitting MP at your school, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
CIVIX has put together a sample framework with suggestions on how to structure an hour-long Rep Day visit. It often works well to have a student moderator to keep the visit on schedule and organized.
You are welcome to adhere to this, or adapt it to best suit your class needs. We do suggest sharing the format that you and your students decide on, with the MP’s office prior to the meeting.
We typically encourage smaller groups for a more engaging and intimate meeting, but you’re welcome to combine classes for a larger group! We can also try to schedule two shorter back-to-back sessions.
Feel free to send us an email at [email protected] to discuss configuration options.
While our resources are available in both languages, the meeting itself depends on the MP’s comfort level with speaking in French. We’ll do our best to facilitate a visit partially in French, but are unable to guarantee this.
We love to see Rep Day in action!
Please confirm with your MP’s office prior to the visit that photos can be shared on social media, and ensure that media release forms have been signed by your students’ parents or guardians. Any social media can be tagged with @CIVIX_Canada or #RepDay, and we will re-post all photos that we see.
We discourage any media or parents from being present, so that the emphasis remains on the students and meaningful discussion with their MP.
